The hill country of northern Galloway is one of the remotest and least populated parts of mainland Britain. Easily accessible from the main A713 road from Castle Douglas to Ayr, this peaceful countryside offers short walks to historic remains and dramatic ridge walks over 2,000 feet. The Heritage Group has created a series of trails to and through the areas of local interest.
Leaflets detailing each of the trails are available at the Heritage Centre in Carsphairn for a donation.
TRAIL 1 - CARSPHAIRN
This is a walk around the village of Carsphairn. It is along the road on pavements in the village, but outside the village it follows the main road.
TRAIL 2 - BARDENNOCH
This route takes you along the old Pack Road, which ran from Whithorn to Strathclyde. It leads through forests and open moor land with fantastic views to the Rhinns of Kells and Cairnsmore of Carsphairn. The path can be very rough and is not always clearly defined. Waterproof boots and warm clothing are recommended.
TRAIL 3 - WOODHEAD MINE
This is a walk on well defined, gently sloping tracks to and around an old Leadmine as well as on forest roads. Some of it is on exposed hillside so warm clothing may be necessary.
TRAIL 4 - WATER OF DEUGH WITH KINGS CAIRN TRAIL
This is a circular trail and has an important site a few minutes into the walk. It follows the Water of Deugh and passes through forests on well defined tracks and paths.
TRAIL 5 - MEDIEVAL CROSSES
This route takes you partly along the old Pack Road, which ran from Whithorn to Strathclyde. There are fantastic views to the Rhinns of Kells and Cairnsmore of Carsphairn. The path can be very rough and muddy and is not always clearly defined. Waterproof boots and warm clothing are recommended.
