The current Carsphairn Church is 202 years old but there has been a church on site since the 1630s. It has had an interesting history, witnessing turbulent periods through the ensuing centuries and it has left us with a legacy of a beautiful, simple building containing the only central communion table still in use in the South of Scotland. It also has a feeling of tranquillity, peace and continuity as well as a very special attribute in these modern times - superb natural acoustics.
The Kirk Session feel, as current custodians, we have a duty to maintain the building in its current excellent condition so that future generations may be able to enjoy a sense of history and also a time to reflect on the present and future. We want to sustain an iconic landmark in Carsphairn. Nowadays this is a greater challenge. We have a "balance sheet" which shows on one side a decreasing income, a declining, aging membership and on the other increasing costs, regulatory burdens and higher running and maintenance costs. For instance our insurance in 2016 cost £1173.
In order to attempt to be pro-active in 2010 the Kirk Session set up the Friends of Carsphairn Church so that those who do not wish to be members or even attend services might consider contributing financially to maintain a building which has its own special beauty and character. Since then the Friends have generously supported the Fabric fund and without their help we could not have kept our church at its current very high standard.
If you would like to contribute towards the upkeep of Carsphairn Church either by a one-off payment or an annual sum we would be very grateful. Cheques should be made payable to Carsphairn Church Fabric Fund and be sent to the Session Clerk, Mrs Anna Campbell at Holm of Daltallochan, Carsphairn, Castle Douglas DG7 3TH or alternatively you may wish to set up a standing order to the Church's Fabric Account at the Bank of Scotland (Account Number 00249851, sort code 80-06-11.) If you are a tax payer and you have not filled in a Gift Aid declaration we would be grateful if you could consider doing so.
